My favorite primers for oily, acne-prone skin and how to use them

Starting off with….

Milk Makeup Blur Stick

Cost:

1.0 oz $36.00 USD
This primer blurs my pores better than anything I’ve ever tried AND it doesn’t break me out. The formula is silicone free. It is noncomedogenic per cosdna.com

The way I use this is literally just rubbing it all over my face. I don’t rub it in with my hands as I’ve found this doesn’t help and it also kind of “un-blurs” things. It has a matte finish but it does not help with oil control whatsoever. This does not increase the longevity of my makeup at all but I love it so much!

Dr. Brandt Pores No More Primer

Cost:

0.5 oz $22.00 USD

1.0 oz $45.00 USD

1.7 oz $60.00 USD ( Sephora Only )
This primer starts as a beige color that transforms into a translucent powder finish. It keeps me matte while filling in my pores. It makes my makeup go on really smooth as well and really gives my makeup great staying power for all day wear. It contains tea tree oil, essential oil with antimicrobial properties, flaxseed extract which absorb oil and microspheres which are mineral-rich powders that fill in large pores and reduce their appearance.

This is one you really have to tap in to fill in your pores. I begin at the center of my face with a raisin sized amount and stipple this in with my fingers. By stipple; I mean I tap it in with very short slight dragging motions to blend it. This is the best way I’ve found to blur my pores, if I’m having difficulty filling in my pores I’ve found just using one finger and really tapping and zoning in can help.

Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer

Cost:

0.5 oz $16.00 USD

1 oz $36.00 USD

1.7 oz $49.00 USD ( Sephora Only )
I received this primer in my Sephora Play box and thought to myself “I’m going to hate this, this isn’t for my skin type.”  I tried it anyway and I was shocked. I have very textured skin (translation: tiny acne scars and rough bumpy skin that is not from dryness) on my chin and my makeup always separates on my chin no matter what I do…EXCEPT with this primer. It does not really absorb oil or fill in pores but it makes foundation blend out so easily, keeps my foundation all in one piece all day and helps it hold up through touch ups.

To use this I take a raisin sized amount and smooth it over my face like a moisturizer starting from the center outward paying extra attention to problem areas like my chin.

Benefit Cosmetics The Porefessional Face Primer

Cost:

0.25 oz $12.00 USD

0.75 oz $31.00 USD

1.5 oz $49.00 USD
This primer is very similar to the Pores No More Primer. This is the pore filling primer that always comes to mind when you think of pore filling primers. This is slightly mattifying but I tend to use it in colder weather when I’m not as oily because it doesn’t mattify all day. It fills in my pores beautifully and evens out my skin tone just a little.

I take a raisin sized amount and start from the center of my face where I have the most pores and stipple outward.

NARS Pore & Shine Control Primer

Cost:

1.0 oz $36.00 USD
This primer is super lightweight. It keeps my skin matte and my makeup in place all day without feeling heavy or drying out my skin. Although this primer claims to minimize pores I have not found that it does this. The consistency is too thin. It contains African Whitewood and Oleanolic Acid combine with peptides to help balance skin.

I love that this is so easy to apply. I squeeze out a large raisin size amount and just go to town and smooth it on like moisturizer.

Urban Decay Optical Illusion Complexion Primer

Cost: $34.00

Size: 0.95 oz
This is the primer I wore on my wedding day. It is SO good. It fills in my fine lines and pores and significantly increases the longevity of my makeup. It is quite thick and as your apply it it does make your face appear more porcelain and slightly pink, but it does not make my foundation look lighter or change the color in any way. It is slightly moisturizing but has a matte, powdery finish which helps to balance my oily skin. It contains argan oil, rosehip oil and meadowfoam seed oil as well as antioxidants and vitamin E.

To apply this I take 1 1/2 pumps (the size of a large raisin) and do the same stippling motion with this from the center of my face working outward.
